Home Batteries with Solar PV

A home battery stores electricity from a solar array so the house can use it later. 0% VAT on a home battery fitted at your home from 1 February 2024 until 31 March 2027, including a battery on its own that stores grid electricity. Whether a battery fits is decided by a survey of the array, the inverter, the consumer unit, and the space. Home Energy Scotland's published table lists heat pumps and other named measures. This note states the VAT rule and those heat pump amounts.

Panels generate while light is on the roof. A battery holds some of that electricity for later in the day. It can be installed with a new array or added where an existing array can accept it. The quote names the battery scope, any inverter changes, the materials, and the labour. Kilowatt-hours are set in that quote for the house.

0% VAT on a home battery fitted at your home from 1 February 2024 until 31 March 2027. That covers a battery fitted with solar as one job, a battery added to solar, wind, or hydro, and a battery on its own that stores grid electricity. From 1 April 2027 the rate is 5%. If you only buy the battery and nobody fits it, VAT is at the standard rate.

0% VAT on solar installs until 31 March 2027. From 1 April 2027 the rate is 5%. That 0% covers the panels, the cables, the controller, and the inverter, fitted in or on the building. If you only buy the equipment and nobody fits it, VAT is at the standard rate. Houses and blocks of flats both qualify.

Home Energy Scotland can pay a grant of up to £7,500 towards a heat pump, and you can add an optional interest-free loan of £7,500. The same amounts apply to air, ground, and water source heat pumps, and to a heat network connection. The heat pump has to run all of your heating and hot water. Rural and island homes can get an extra £1,500 on the heating grant when an advisor confirms the address.

You can usually put solar panels on your house without a planning application when they stick out by 1 metre or less from the wall or roof. You need to apply if the house is listed, in the grounds of a listed building, or in a World Heritage Site. In a conservation area, the panels go on the back of the house, or on a side that faces away from the road.

The survey writes down the array size that is already there or the array being proposed, the inverter, the spare ways in the consumer unit, ventilation and space for the battery, and the cable route. The quote then names materials and labour. If the electrical system needs extra work before storage can be added, that work is in the quote. Kilowatt-hours are chosen for the house, in that document.
