Yes, air source heat pumps work exceptionally well in sub-zero Scottish winters. Modern thermodynamic refrigerants boil at sub-zero temperatures (as low as -40°C), allowing the system to extract latent environmental heat even when the air freezes. An air source heat pump operates using a closed-loop refrigeration cycle containing this eco-friendly refrigerant. As cold outdoor air is drawn across the evaporator heat exchanger, the refrigerant absorbs the latent thermal energy and boils instantly into a gas. This gas is then compressed by a variable-speed scroll compressor, raising its pressure and temperature to over 60°C. This intensive heat is then transferred directly into your home's central heating water circuit via a high-performance plate heat exchanger. This process delivers up to 4kW of heat for every 1kW of electricity used, representing a Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCoP) of 4.0.

Yes, you can successfully install an air source heat pump in a traditional solid sandstone home. Sandstone has high thermal mass—it acts as a dense heat sponge.
