Commercial rooftop solar in the Lothians: from survey to switch-on
If you run an office, workshop, unit or farm, you might be wondering what a rooftop solar project actually involves. Here's how a typical project runs, step by step.
1. Data review
Half-hourly electricity data or recent bills show how much power you use and when. Daytime demand is what makes rooftop solar work for a business.
2. Roof and site survey
We check the roof structure, its condition and remaining life, access, shading, and your electrical supply and switchgear.
3. Design and fixed written quote
The system is sized to your load, not to fill the roof for the sake of it.
4. Grid application (G99)
Larger systems need approval from SP Energy Networks before they connect. The network operator may approve the system as designed, set an export limit, or ask for network work. Allow weeks, sometimes longer.
5. Permissions
You'll need landlord consent if you lease the building. Some properties also need planning or building checks.
6. Installation and handover
The quoted work is carried out to the agreed date. At handover you get the documentation, along with the monitoring set-up.
VAT and tax
The 0% VAT rate on solar is for homes. Ask your accountant how VAT and capital allowances apply to your business.
